If you know me, you know about my love and obsession for New Kids on the Block. (Sidebar: I refuse to call them The Block. It's just not happening). When I was in middle school, I had a group of friends that loved them more than anything. We wrote stories about ourselves and each member of the group. Also, when everybody announced who they liked, somehow I got stuck with Jordan because I didn't want my friend Sarah to be mad at me. It's not that he was horrendous, but she had already claimed Donnie. What? Yes, you read that correctly. I have no clue why I didn't just say "I love him too" and we could go with it. But no. I was a closet Donnie fan. We laugh about it now because it was stupid. Now we all just say they are all good looking - even you Danny. I felt sorry for him because nobody really liked him. Then there was Jon. Amy was just in love with him, now he likes the boys. Nice. I hated it when they kind of walked away, but it was time. They were everywhere and it was ridiculous.Cut to (this line is compliments of Madonna on Will & Grace) 2008 and six 30(ish) year old women going to the concert. So awesome. We left B'ham around 11:00. We were all so excited that we couldn't stand it. We stopped in Anniston at Chick Fil A. At lunch, I learned of Bon Qui Qui. Dang. We then decided to go to Wal-mart and buy some shoe polish and write on my friends mini-van. We each wrote on our window who we loved and then "Honk of you love NKOTB" on the back. When we got to Atlanta, people were honking I think I shouted something about being the popular kids. I was so embarrassed. Anyway, we got to Atlanta and went to the mall, hoping they would be there because that's what they did back in the day - go to the mall before concerts. We just walked around & some of my friends bought stuff. I was too excited & could've gone to sit in my seat at that point.
After the mall, we decided to eat at a mexican restaurant called Frontera. Well, so did everybody else going to the concert because there was a 45 minute wait. What? Yeah. So my friend worked some magic and cut to us sitting outside in 55 degree weather. When the waiter said we could sit outside, we got some very nasty looks. In our defense, he said that nobody asked. If I had been waiting like that and some girls cut in front of us, I would've said something to them.
With stuffed tummies, we headed to the concert which was just across the street. One of the girls in the group has gallbladder issues & got sick. I felt so bad for her. Was I a good friend and stayed with her? No, I bailed and then felt bad when we were in our seats & she was throwing up in the bathroom. So Amy went to check on her. Natasha Bedingfield opened. She wasn't too bad, but I was over her before she started. Note to everybody: It pays to watch The Hills because I was the only person who knew who Lady Gaga was when she came out. I didn't pay her any attention. I wanted to see my boys so bad. We made friends with the girls in front of us because we all have a common ground - NKOTB.
The lights dimmed and my friends, that are in their 30's, grabbed hands and screamed and jumped up and down. They didn't come out for another 3 mins or so but we still jumped & screamed. They came out & we screamed louder and harder. I mean ridiculous. For the past month, I listened to the new CD because I had to know all of the words. Good thing is that they did a mix of old and new stuff. My friend returned and was feeling better. We had pretty decent seats but it got better.
All of a sudden, security people came out and started clearing off the floor. We were on the 2nd row above the floor so I didn't know what was going on. HELLO - they came running out & performed several songs (Sidebar: I love "Dirty Dancing" and "2 in the morning") on a platform in the middle of the floor. Rather close to us. I think that's when I screamed the most. At one point as I was screaming, I felt something in my throat kind of pop and I tried my best not to scream anymore - but no luck. They went back on stage and did other songs. Jordan did his one hit wonder and so did Joey. My friend said "I'm not going home until they change into their jeans and do Hanging Tough".
Well the boys did the ol' "Shows over" fake out that nobody really falls for. The crowd did the "OOOH OOOOH OH OH OH - HANGING TOUGH" chant. Well they came back out and sang Step By Step. Fake out number 2 occurred and they finally came out and did Hanging Tough. Because I watched the Behind the Music special in VH1, I knew that they wrote that song for the Celtics. When Paul Pierce and KG were on the jumbo tron - I knew it. I looked around and the entire crowd was on their feet the entire time screaming and it gave me chills. It was crazy. Most of the crowd was women our age. There were a few men there, but they were either kidnapped or liked boys. The concert ended and we drove back to Birmingham that night.
I got in the bed about 2:30 and when I woke up, my abs were hurting, my legs were bruised and my throat was hurting. The abs hurt because of the screaming & laughing. My legs were bruised because the chairs below us kept bumping into me - crazy I know. My throat hurt from the screaming & singing at the top of my lungs. It is 2 days later and my voice is very raspy.
I think it's one of the best concerts I've ever been to. The Snoop/Korn/Linkin Park was so awesome but this one was better because of my group. It's all about your environment with certain things and I'm so glad we all got along and there was no conflict what so ever. I plan to do it all over again whenever they come back. I don't care if I'm 60. I have been on-line and looked at several videos of our concert. I love NKOTB and always have. Just because "they walked away" doesn't mean I did.
Here's some pics:

I know Donnie is wishing he had my phone number.
They were serenading just us.
Donnie wanting me to run into his arms.
My awesome NKOTB group - minus Sarah. She later joined us.
